Australia's international passengers up 90% month-on-month in May

There were 214,246 passengers who travelled internationally into or out of Australia in May, up 90% from 112,857 passengers in April, figures from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) showed. Read More » The bulk of the month-on-month increase was due to travel between Australia and New Zealand, with May being the first full month of quarantine free travel across the Tasman. Air New Zealand was Australia's largest international airline in May, carrying 49% or 104,980 passengers, followed by Qantas (22% or 48,488 passengers) and Jetstar (6.7% or 14,353 passengers). When compared with pre-COVID-19 levels, the May figure was down 93.3% from Australia's 3.2 million international passengers carried in May 2019. Capacity for May declined 80% from two years ago.
