Indonesia's Lion Air Group intends to stand down about 8,000 staff as pandemic travel restrictions impacted demand for air travel, local media has reported, citing an airline statement. The privately held company's carriers - Batik Air, Lion Air and Wings Air in Indonesia, Malaysia's Malindo and Thai Lion in Thailand - are operating between 10% and 15% of their normal daily capacity. New COVID-19 infections in Indonesia soared above 50,000 a day in mid-July, although the total has since reclined.
Daily COVID-19 cases in Malaysia exceeded 17,000 at July 31 compared with an average of 6,000 a day in the first week of the month. In Thailand, positive COVID-19 patients have increased to 17,000 a day in the last week, World Health Organisation figures show.
