Japan's two largest airline groups record passenger jump during Obon festival holiday

All Nippon Airways (ANA) said it flew 645,879 passengers on domestic flights during Japan's Obon festival - from August 6 to August 15. Read More » While the figure was up 40.7% from the 459,190 passengers flown during the 2020 festival, it was 58.3% below the 1,547,578 passengers the airline transported during the 2019 festival period. Japan Airlines (JAL) flew 449,578 domestic passengers during the 10-day holiday period, up 29.8% from 346,386 passengers in 2020. The 2021 figure was 57.3% below the 1,053,636 passengers the flag carrier flew during the festival in in 2019. JAL said passenger numbers were impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Japan.
