Vietnamese regulator recommends 10 domestic routes be reopened, backs Bamboo Airways U.S. aspirations

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has proposed 10 domestic routes be resumed after consulting 21 provinces and cities with airports about plans to safely reopen air transport. Read More » The CAAV said on its website Wednesday it had received written responses from 13 of the provinces and cities with six fully agreeing, four partially in favour and four, including Hanoi, not yet ready. The authority recommended 10 routes that could be opened from October 10: from Ho Chi Minh City and Thanh Hoa, Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Phu Quoc, Thua Thien Hue and Nghe An as well as between n Thanh Hoa and Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Phu Quoc, Thua Thien Hue and Nghe An. The CAAV said routes could only be opened with the consent of both destinations involved and more would be added as support was received from other localities. Passengers on the resumed services must meet medical requirements such as wearing face masks and producing certificates that proved they are fully vaccinated or have recovered from COVID-19 no more than six months before departure. Meanwhile, Vietnamese media reported the CAAV has backed Bamboo Airways as one of Vietnam’s designated airlines for regular direct services to the U.S. Bamboo is authorised to operate charter flights to the U.S, and flew its first in September with 787-9s. It used the trip to sign Memoranda of Understanding with San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport for the launch of scheduled nonstop flights. At that point, Bamboo is planning four flights a week to San Francisco from Ho Chi Minh City. Flag carrier Vietnam Airlines also is planning U.S. services.
