Malaysia Airports has attributed a 74% increase in domestic traffic between August and September to the Langkawi travel bubble and the progress being made by Malaysia’s National Recovery Plan. Read More » The surge resulted in a 55% increase in passenger movements to 458,000 for the month. Of these, 362,000 were domestic passengers and 96,00 were international travellers. About 37,000 passenger movements resulted from the Langkawi travel bubble as it was implemented between September 16 and September 29. Malaysia-wide, domestic aircraft movements in September were 20% higher than August at more than 10,000 flights. Malaysia Airports said it was optimistic the encouraging travel trend would continue with the lifting of interstate and international travel restrictions. Meanwhile, the company’s Turkish asset, Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, recorded 2.7 million passenger movements in September to remain the major contributor to the group’s total passenger movements of 3.2 million passengers. In terms of cargo, Malaysia Airports reported operations in September rose 24% from the same period last year to about 726,800 metric tonnes. “It (cargo) remains an important vehicle for aviation and economic recovery,’’ the airport group said.
