Tata Sons working on merging AirAsia India with Air India Express: report

Indian conglomerate, Tata Sons, is reportedly planning to merge AirAsia India with Air India Express in a strategy that would cut operational costs and create synergies at both budget carriers. Read More » Citing unnamed sources, India’s Economic Times said Tata Sons has held several meetings with the management of AirAsia India and Air India Express owner, Air India, to discuss the integration of staff and aircraft quality and safety checks. Tata owns 83.67% of AirAsia India and will acquire the remaining equity in the LCC from AirAsia Berhad for US$19 million, according to Nikkei Asia. It will gain ownership of Air India Express through its acquisition of Air India, which is expected to be completed by year-end. Tata reportedly wants to move quickly on merging the LLCs. It also is talking with Singapore Airlines about integrating the schedules of their joint venture, Vistara, with those of Air India, with talks yet to conclude. Tata has not commented on the latest merger report, according to Indian media.
