Australia and Singapore restrict travel from threat of the COVID-19 Omicron variant

Singapore has closed its border to certain non-citizens who have been to seven countries in Africa - Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe – in response to the emergence of the COVID-19 Omicron variant. Read More » On Friday, the Singapore government said long-term pass holders and short-term visitors who have been to those countries in the past 14 days would be prohibited from travelling to or transiting through the country. Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, said the government was watching developments very closely of the Omicron variant, which the World Health Organisation describes as a variant of concern.
Over the weekend, the Australian government introduced additional travel restrictions for travellers from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Various state governments have reimposed quarantine measures and started testing recent international arrivals after the discovery of the new variant.
