AirAsia Malaysia CEO, Riad Asmat, has called on regulators to approve the LCC's request to boost frequencies on flights between Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak for the Christmas and Chinese New Year period to support lower fares. Read More » Asmat said the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) and the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) recently approved an additional 42 flights a week linking Sarawak with Peninsular Malaysia. However, the seats on those flights were very quickly sold.

"We would like to express our sincere appreciation to SDMC and MOTS for the additional flight approvals for the Christmas holiday season," Asmat said. "However, we appeal to MOTS and SDMC also to approve our request for extra Chinese New Year flights and remove frequency restrictions on all the approved flights for us to better manage cost efficiency and lower fares for passengers." AirAsia has scheduled 158 flights a week between Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak from December 4 to January 5. The LCC was operating up to 310 flights a week on those routes pre-pandemic.
