International visitors return to Australia after border rules relaxed

Australia is welcoming international visitors for the first time since the start of the pandemic, giving hope to thousands of tourism and hospitality businesses across the country that an often stalled recovery will finally take hold. Read More » The scale of the downturn in international passenger traffic was highlighted in figures from the country's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE). In December 2021, 400,992 passengers flew into and out of Australia, 90.1% down from the four million passengers carried in the same month in 2019, BITRE said. Capacity was 17.8% of 2019 levels, it added. Singapore Airlines (SIA) was Australia's largest international carrier by passengers transported for the month, with a 15.3% market share, followed by Emirates Airline (13.2%) and Qantas (12.5%).
