Asia-Pacific passenger demand up 19.4% in January: IATA

Air traffic demand at Asia-Pacific airlines, measured by revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), rose 19.4% in January compared with the same month in 2021, figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) show. Read More » While encouraging, the region experienced the weakest growth in RPKs among the six regions covered by the airline lobby group's monthly passenger traffic report, IATA said. It also was well below an overall 82.3% improvement in RPKs for the airline industry. "The recovery in air travel continued in January despite hitting a speed bump called Omicron," IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said. "Strengthened border controls did not stop the spread of the variant. But where population immunity was strong, public health systems were not overwhelmed.” Many governments were adjusting their COVID-19 polices to align with those for other endemic viruses, IATA said. "This includes lifting travel restrictions that have had such a devastating impact on lives, economies and the freedom to travel," Walsh said.
