China Eastern Airlines reports “low” Spring Festival passenger traffic

China Eastern Airlines (CEA) said travel during the Spring Festival remained below pre-COVID-19 levels despite an improvement from 2021. Read More » The SkyTeam alliance member's monthly traffic report showed it carried 5.6 million passengers on domestic flights in February 2022, up 43.9%, from 3.9 million passengers transported in the same month in 2021. The February result was 11.7% above the five million domestic passengers CEA flew in January. Domestic passenger load factor for the 28 days was 64.4% against 62.7% in February 2021 and 56.3% in January. CEA reiterated comments made in previous monthly traffic reports that the COVID-19 pandemic still had a "significant impact" on its air transportation business and added there remained great uncertainty about the extent and impact of the pandemic. "The 2022 Spring Festival travel rush was generally characterised by ‘low total passenger traffic flow with passengers mainly being migrant workers and homeland visitors',” CEA said.
