Korean Air marshalling global expertise to win approval for Asiana Airlines merger

Korean Air (KAL) is mobilising all available company resources to persuade regulators worldwide to approve its proposed merger with rival, Asiana Airlines. Read More » KAL said the airline group had engaged three global law firms, eight local legal advocacies and three economic consultancies to support its lobbying efforts. A theme from some regulators, KAL said, was the need to attract new market entrants that would maintain the competitive environment provided by KAL and Asiana before the merger was proposed. The flag carrier is arguing it is impossible for two full-service carriers to survive in South Korea given the size of the market. KAL announced its proposal to acquire Asiana in November 2020 and hopes the merger will be in place by 2024.
