Australia’s Regional Express decides Sydney-Canberra route “no longer viable”

Domestic airline, Regional Express (Rex), will cease nonstop Canberra-Sydney flights on May 30 due to competition on the route and high airport charges. Read More » “Unfortunately, the entry of an additional operator and the very high charges imposed by Sydney Airport from June 1, mean the route is no longer viable for Rex,” the airline's deputy chairman, John Sharp, said. “Rex’s resources will be diverted to routes that will provide a better return.” Rex started flying on the route linking Australia's most populous city with the nation's capital in April 2021. It is the second route withdrawal Rex has announced in the last week. The regional airline also is shutting down Melbourne-Albury on May 29 after 39 years operating between the two destinations. The decision was the result of competition from Qantas, Rex said.
