Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) director general, Subhas Menon, said there were encouraging signs for air travel in the region after passenger numbers rose by more than a third in April compared with a month earlier. Read More » “With vaccination rates high in the region, the general easing of border regulations has unleashed pent-up travel demand as evidenced by strong growth in international passenger numbers in April and healthy forward booking patterns,” Menon said. The latest AAPA figures report the region’s carriers flew 4.8 million passengers on scheduled international services in April, up 37.4% month-on-month from 3.5 million passengers flown in March. The April figure also was more than three times higher than the 1.3 million passengers carried by Asia-Pacific airlines in April 2021. “To build on the current momentum towards a full recovery, it is vital governments and industry stakeholders collaborate closely to simplify border measures and streamline digital applications to make air travel truly seamless,” Menon said. Compared with pre-COVID-19 levels, the month’s numbers were down 84.5% from the 31.2 million international passengers carried by airlines across the region in April 2019. The AAPA’s statistics are aggregated from the traffic data of 40 Asia-Pacific airlines.
