The evenings were all glamour and glitz, but the message the association’s director general and CEO, Tony Tyler delivered to the industry audience was sobering. Industry profits for 2014 were downgraded by $700 million, to $18 billion, a viable global airline tracking system had to be developed and implemented, progress towards meeting carbon neutral industry targets by 2020 must not falter and innovation – to reduce costs – must flourish.

Tyler said the best way forward was for airlines, governments and the industry’s stake holders to establish global standards. “The key to unlocking aviation’s future potential is a global mindset supported by strong partnerships. In a team effort of committed partners, aviation literally moves the global economy. By working together with a global mindset there is enormous potential still be achieved,” he said.

IATA 2014 financial forecast
• $18 billion profit
• 2.4% expected industry profit margin
• 5.9% forecast passenger growth
• $3.2 billion profit for Asia-Pacific carriers
