“The combination of the war in Ukraine and COVID-19 lockdowns in China have pushed up energy costs, intensified supply chain disruptions and fed inflation,” IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said. “The operating environment is challenging for all businesses, including air cargo.” IATA said demand, or cargo tonne kilometres (CTK), declined 11.2% in April compared with the same month in 2021. Capacity, measured by available cargo tonne kilometres (ACTK), was also down for the 30 days compared with the year-ago period. The Asia-Pacific was the weakest performer of the six regions covered in the report with CTKs and capacity tumbling 15.8% and 19.4%, respectfully. “Airlines in the region have been heavily impacted by lower trade and manufacturing activity due to Omicron-related lockdowns in China,” IATA said.
