ATR CEO, Stefano Bortoli, expects the number of the turboprop maker's aircraft operating in Japan to hit triple digits before the end of the decade due to increased demand for regional travel. Read More » “We see 100 ATR aircraft flying in Japan in a few years,” Bortoli said. ATRs operating in Japan had grown to 15 since the first turboprop arrived in the country six years ago, the manufacturer said. “Air transport is crucial for the archipelago, where air routes are essential for domestic travel and transportation,” Bortoli said. “We want to help ensure aviation contributes to a prosperous future for Japan by connecting its regions ever more sustainably and affordably. Most of the new ATRs will replace older, less efficient models and will connect islands and remote regions with the country’s major cities.” There are three ATR operators in Japan - Amakusa Airline, Japan Air Commuter and Hokkaido Air System. Toki Air and Oriental Air Bridge are expected to commence ATR operations in the period ahead.
