Airbus A321XLR completes maiden test flight

Airbus has completed the first flight of its A321XLR aircraft. Read More » The long-range narrow-body, MSN11000 registration F-WXLR, took off from Hamburg Finkenwerder at 1100 local time on June 15. Flight tracking websites showed the aircraft was in the air for approximately five hours, flying along the German coastline west of Hamburg, south towards Hanover, north past Lubeck and west along the Mecklenburgisches Elbetal nature reserve. In a slide presentation, Airbus said it planned to have three A321XLR flight test aircraft - two with CFM LEAP-1A engines MSN11000 and MSN11080, and one with Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, MSN11058. There also will be an A321neo prototype aircraft in the program. “Start of flight tests enables validation of design changes related to type certification,” Airbus said. The A321XLR type is designed to fly up to 11 hours, has a range of 4,700nm (8,700km), delivers a maximum take-off weight of 101 tonnes and has a seating capacity of 244 passengers in a single-class layout. Entry into service is scheduled for early 2024.
