Japan Airlines to raise fuel surcharges for third time in 2022

Japan Airlines (JAL) has applied to the country's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to increase fuel surcharges on its international passenger tickets sold in Japan. Read More » The higher surcharge is planned for tickets purchased from August 1 to September 30. It is the third time this year JAL has sought government approval to increase fuel surcharges. The International Air Transport Association’s jet fuel price monitor, published on June 17, said jet fuel costs in Asia and Oceania had risen 131.9% from a year ago. The largest increases are for oneworld alliance member services to South Korea and Far East Russia, where the fuel surcharges, if approved, will be higher by 44%, at 5,900 yen (US$44), from 4,100 yen previously. The next biggest increase in percentage terms will be for flights to Guam, Palau, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mongolia and Irkutsk, where the fuel surcharge is going up by 40%, to 17,800 yen.
