Australian economy air fares rise 56% in four months competition commission reveals

Read More » Discounted economy domestic fares rose 56% from April to August and business class ticket prices were up 17% between June and last month. “After about 18 months of historically low airfares, the cost of domestic flying has increased sharply in response to strong demand, temporary capacity reductions and very high jet fuel prices,” ACCC chair, Gina Cass-Gottlieb, said. “Discount economy airfares in August were at their highest point in almost two years. In these circumstances, more than ever, the level of competition between airlines is incredibly important to maintain pressure on ticket prices and service levels across the industry.” Qantas had a 39% share of the domestic market in July, followed by Virgin Australia (33%), Qantas LCC, Jetstar (23%) and Rex at 5%. The competition regulator also confirmed it is investigating consumer complaints about difficulties in securing Qantas flight credits.
