Australia records 27.2% jump in international passengers in July

There were 2.1 million air travellers into and out of Australia in July, up from the 1.6 international passengers who entered and departed the country in June, Australia's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) has reported. Read More » The July numbers were 44.9% below the 3.7 million international passengers travelling to and from Australia in the same 30 days in 2019. Capacity was 46.8% lower, at 2.5 million seats. “International passenger traffic continues to be severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the BITRE report said. Qantas was Australia's largest carrier of international passengers for the month, with 17.1% of the market, followed by Singapore Airlines (SIA) at 12.8% and Jetstar (12.7%). Jetstar was one of two LCCs in the top 10 table, along with SIA’s Scoot. The Qantas Group carrier came in at 7th place with a 4.7% share of the air passenger market. Also notable in BITRE's July report was the return of Virgin Australia to the top 10 rankings. The Australian carrier, which has resumed international flying to Fiji and Bali, squeezed in at 10th place for the month with 2.4% of the passenger market.
