Global airline association reports 67.7% increase in passenger demand

The airline lobby group's monthly passenger report shows demand, or revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), rose 67.7% in August compared with the same month in 2021. RPKs were at 73.7% of pre-COVID-19 levels for the month, IATA said. Global capacity, or available seat kilometres, was up 43.6% year-on-year. Asia-Pacific carriers posted August RPK growth of 141.6% and their capacity increased 76.5%. The Asia-Pacific experienced the strongest year-over-year expansion among the industry’s six global regions, but travel restrictions into China continued to hinder the overall recovery of the region, IATA said.
