Australia welcomes two million international air travellers in August

Two million air passengers flew into and from Australia in August, down 100,000 international airline passengers from July, reports Australia's Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE). Read More » The August numbers were 44.8% below the 3.6 million international passengers travelling to and from the country in the same 30 days in 2019. Capacity was 45% lower than pre-pandemic levels, at 2.5 million seats. “International passenger traffic continues to be severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the BITRE report said. Qantas Airways was Australia's largest carrier of international passengers for the month, with 16.7% of the market, followed by Singapore Airlines (SIA) at 13.2% and Jetstar (12.9%). Jetstar was one of two LCCs in the top 10 table, along with SIA’s Scoot in seventh place (4.5% market share).
