Australia’s competition commission rejects Qantas takeover of Alliance Air
April 21st 2023
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has knocked back the proposed full acquisition of Alliance Aviation Services by the Qantas Group. Read More » The ACCC said it opposed the Qantas plan to acquire the 80.1% of the regional and charter airline it did not already own because it could substantially lessen competition in the fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) sector, increase prices and reduce service quality for customers. “Qantas and Alliance strongly compete with each other in markets where there are few effective alternatives,” ACCC chair, Gina Cass-Gottlieb, said. “The proposed acquisition would have combined two of the largest suppliers of charter services in Western Australia and Queensland.” In May last year, Qantas Group, which owns 19.9% of Alliance, announced its intention to acquire all of the FIFO’s remaining shares. Qantas Group said it will seek more information from the ACCC about the decision.
