May 10th 2023
United Airlines (UA) has strenuously opposed a Delta Air Lines application to vary its routes between the U.S. and Tokyo Haneda. Read More » Delta has asked the U.S. Department of Transport (DoT) for revision of the slot allocation program, based on market conditions, under a three-year pilot program. The proposal is supported by American Airlines.
“United strongly disagrees with Delta and American that the current demand environment warrants a sudden departure from the department’s long-standing procedures and precedent,” UA said in its submission to the DoT. “Japan’s market is rebounding, and access to limited entry route rights should continue to be about consumers, communities and shippers, as it always has been, and not about the financial performance of carriers,” UA said. “The DoT should be the ultimate arbiter of the best U.S. gateways to ensure the maximum benefits of the Haneda slots, not Delta or American, who are appearing to prioritise their own profits over benefitting consumers.”
