Air cargo volumes recorded Europe-Asia growth in latest reported month

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said global air cargo demand rose 5.5% in July led by double-digit expansion of the Europe-Asia corridor. Air cargo demand strength on Europe-Asia and North America-Europe trade lanes helped offset a 1% slippage in Cargo Tonne kilometres (CTK) across the Asia-North America trade line. "A sharp decline in e-commerce after the U.S. de minimis exemptions on small shipments expired was likely offset by shippers frontloading goods in advance of rising tariffs on imports to the U.S.," IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said. "August will likely more clearly reveal the impact of shifting U.S. trade policies. Much attention is rightly being focused on developments in markets connected to the U.S. so it is important to keep a broad perspective on the global network." A fifth of air cargo travels on the Europe-Asia trade lane. At July 31, air cargo had expanded for 29 consecutive months delivering growth 13.5% year-on-year, IATA said.
