Air New Zealand domestic passengers down 8.9% month-on-month in May

Air New Zealand's (Air NZ) monthly traffic report showed it flew 739,000 passengers across its domestic network in May, down 8.9% from 811,000 passengers in April. Read More » When compared with pre-COVID-19 levels, the May figure was 13.6% below the 855,000 domestic passengers carried in May 2019. Comparisons with 2020 traffic figures were not meaningful given travel within New Zealand was heavily restricted due to COVID-19. The Star Alliance member's domestic passenger load factor in May was 81.7%, compared with 84.6% in April 2021 and 86.3% in May 2019. May domestic capacity - available seat kilometres - was 90.4% of May 2019 levels. There were 101,000 passengers transported on Air NZ's Tasman/Pacific network in May, the first full month of quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand. The removal of quarantine – Air Travel Bubble - resulted in passenger numbers between the two countries more than doubling in April.
