All 14 members of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) have committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Read More » AAPA director general, Subhas Menon, said yesterday reaching the target would require cooperation with multiple stakeholders and be underpinned by advancements in technology, operational improvements, the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facilities and global market based measures. "Today's announcement is a commitment to a more ambitious long-term goal that surpasses the prevailing industry long-term goal," Menon told reporters during an online media briefing. Menon said five AAPA members – All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines – already had committed to a net zero 2050 goal.

In a reflection of the size of the task, Menon said 2,500 facilities would be required to produce enough SAF to meet the demands of airlines across the Asia-Pacific. It is estimated the region's airlines will require 40% of global SAF production, which equated to 450 million tonnes to 500 million tonnes by 2050. "At the moment, there is a lack of SAF investment and facilities in the Asia-Pacific compared with other regions," Menon said. "Right now the price for sustainable aviation fuels is several times that of fossil fuels."
