Singapore-backed Regional Express (Rex) will launch triple daily weekday flights between Brisbane and Sydney and double daily services on weekends as it sharpens its focus on the Queensland travel market. Read More » The new route, due to start December 17, will result in the airline flying on all legs of the traditionally busy Sydney-Melbourne-Brisbane “golden triangle” as it expands its domestic network. The Sydney-Brisbane announcement follows the full-service airline announcement on Monday that it will start Brisbane-Melbourne flights, also from December 17, and base one of its six 737s in the Queensland capital. Rex also is looking closely at servicing a range of regional and holiday destinations in Queensland. “Brisbane is a key gateway for Rex and will very quickly become the launch pad for further forays into the Queensland market in the months and years ahead,’’ Rex deputy chairman, John Sharp, said today. The airline launched the service with a sale featuring lead-in A$69 one-way fares and no Christmas blackout period. “Today’s announcement yet again demonstrates our determination to grow our domestic network and provide consumers with safe, reliable and affordable air travel,’’ Sharp said. Rex is competing on the triangle against Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia. Bonza, a new entrant due to launch in the market next year, has indicated it will not enter the Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne fray. Queensland government and airport officials welcomed the extra capacity in time for the holiday season. Queensland eased COVID-19 restrictions ahead of schedule this week as the state’s double vaccination rate reached 70%.
