Western Sydney Airport terminal construction gets underway

Read More » The A$5.3 billion ($US3.84 billion) airport is about a quarter complete as it heads towards an expected 2026 opening. Work on the project has continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic with almost 22 million tonnes of earth moved across a site that is three times bigger than Sydney’s central business district. The high-tech integrated passenger terminal is forecast to cater for about 10 million passengers annually. Its design involved Zaha Hadid Architects and Australian firm, Cox Architecture. Australian-founded company, Multiplex, was awarded the contract to take the initial terminal concepts to final design and to construct the building. The Australian government estimates the cost of the airport, including associated transport links, at about A$14 billion. It will support 11,000 jobs during construction. Details of the most controversial aspect of the project — the flight paths — have yet to be revealed.
