Air New Zealand (Air NZ) CEO, Greg Foran, said the airline remained focused on meeting its sustainability targets in spite of the near-term challenges presented by COVID-19. Read More » "Despite the pandemic grinding our business to a halt, we believe climate change is the biggest crisis facing our airline," Foran wrote in the 2021 Air NZ sustainability report. "If anything our commitment to take action has strengthened." In 2020, Air NZ set a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Foran said the target would not be met without readily available access to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). “This year has seen a renewed focus on the environmental impact of flying. We are acutely aware decarbonising aviation and Air New Zealand will be even more important when borders open," Foran said. “This will be key to our ability to continue to connect New Zealanders to the world and play our part in helping Aotearoa future proof its high-value exports and tourism sectors." The sustainability report's roadmap to decarbonisation showed Air NZ believed SAF had to potential to achieve 50% of its decarbonisation, followed by zero emissions aircraft and fleet renewal at 20%. There was a 2% decarbonisation potential through improvements in operational efficiency, while carbon offsetting would address residual emissions.
