China Eastern Airlines reports 71% drop in domestic passengers following new Omicron outbreaks on the Mainland

China Eastern Airlines (CEA) carried 2.5 million passengers on domestic flights in March 2022, down 71.1%, from the 8.6 million passengers transported in the same month in 2021. Domestic passenger load factor for the 31 days was 60%, against 73.9% in March 2021 and 64.4% in February. CEA reiterated comments made in previous monthly traffic reports that the COVID-19 pandemic still had a "significant impact" on its air transportation business and added there remained great uncertainty about the extent and impact of the pandemic. "In March 2022, new COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide rebounded again to a high level," CEA said. "The number of local outbreaks caused by imported cases significantly escalated with increasingly broader scope of infection. Locally clustered outbreaks took place in multiple communities, covered a wide range of areas and occurred frequently. The number of Omicron cases rose rapidly in many provinces and cities in China."
