Latest data points to strong industry recovery, ICAO boss reports

International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) secretary general, Juan Carlos Salazar, said global traffic data has tracked a healthy global rebound in air travel in the first four months of 2022. Read More » The United Nations agency boss said passenger numbers were up 65% from January to April compared with the same months in 2021. Aircraft flight departures were 30% higher and airline seat capacity increased by 32% in the same months. “These recovery indicators are highly encouraging,” Salazar said. “There is still much to be done, however, and I look forward to the time when we can announce full recoveries in all of the world’s regions.” Some domestic markets, such as Australia and India, had returned to pre-COVID-19 levels, ICAO said, but the pace of recovery in Asia, the Pacific and Africa continued to be more challenging. A return to full seat capacity in Asia and the Pacific is forecast for 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 in Africa.
