Mainland domestic traffic falls 49% month-on-month; airlines hit hard by lockdowns

Airlines in China flew 7.8 million passengers on domestic flights in April, down 49% month-on-month from the 15.3 million domestic passengers they transported in March, Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) figures show. Read More » The April total was 84.7%% below the 51 million passengers carried within China in the same month last year. Domestic passenger load factor for the 30 days was 57.7% compared with 63.2% in March and 78.4% in April 2021. Domestic air travel has been hit hard by stay-at-home orders imposed by authorities on citizens in several Mainland cities, including Shanghai, to contain outbreaks of COVID-19 variants. International travel to China has been severely restricted since the COVID-19 contagion began its global spread in February 2019.
