Demand for air cargo was close to pre-COVID-19 levels in July, figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) outline. Read More » The airline lobby group's monthly report said cargo tonne kilometres (CTK), a measure of demand, were 3.5% below levels of pre-pandemic July 2019. But capacity, or available CTKs (ACTK), was down 7.8% compared with the same month three years ago. “Air cargo is tracking at near 2019 levels although it has taken a step back compared with the extraordinary performance of 2020-2021,” IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said. “Volatility resulting from supply chain constraints and evolving economic conditions has seen cargo markets essentially move sideways since April. July data shows air cargo continues to hold its own, but as is the case for almost all industries, we will need to carefully watch economic and political developments in coming months.” Asia-Pacific airlines continue to be impacted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, labor shortages, and lower levels of trade and manufacturing activity due to Omicron-related restrictions, IATA said.
