Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) had 525,000 passengers pass through its terminals in September, up 9.6% month-on-month from 479,000 air travellers in August. Read More » The numbers were 132.7% higher than the 226,000 passengers processed at HKIA a year earlier. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) said the improved passenger throughput was driven by an increase in returning Hong Kong residents and visitors after the Special Administrative Region relaxed quarantine rules for entry to Hong Kong. AAHK executive director for airport operations, Vivian Cheung, said the authority was working closely with the airport community to prepare for the anticipated recovery in air traffic. “We are maintaining close communications with our business partners to ensure we are ready to handle the expected increase in passenger flow,” Cheung said. “AAHK has spared no effort to ensure health and safety at HKIA, adopting biometrics for touch-less boarding processes and introducing cleaning robots, among other initiatives. We remain very confident about the airport’s long-term development and traffic growth.” For a comparison with pre-COVID-19 levels, HKIA processed 4.9 million passengers in September 2019.
